Auckland man admits having two wives NZ Newswire January 10, 2012, 1:39 pm

An Auckland man has admitted having two wives.

Rodney Peach, 52, originally from South Africa, admitted one charge of bigamy and one of knowing that a document including details of marriage was forged, when he appeared in Manukau District Court on Tuesday, Fairfax Media reported.

Peach was accused of marrying Trisha Faiainoa while still married to Tania Peach, his wife of 28 years and who now lives in Australia.

The couple have two children and are legally separated.

According to Rainey Collins Lawyers bigamy is a punishable crime because it is thought to represent a threat to public morality and to compromise the institution of marriage.

The second marriage is considered the crime, no matter where in the world it takes place.

The only defence is if the first spouse has been absent for seven years, and is believed to be dead.

The maximum term of imprisonment is seven years if there is an attempt to protect an innocent party to a bigamist marriage.

Peach will be sentenced on February 10.

Is any deterrent necessary by incarcerating this chap????? Will men rush off in droves to acquire two or more wives????

Sure bigamy is on the statute books....and he's admitted to the crime.....but incarceration?????? Unnecessary drain on the public purse.

Could you really have two equal wives? There would always be a little jealousy going on with multiple methinks. 1v1 would be plenty.

Mybe they woulfdnt have to be equal.. rather they could be different, then there would be no jealousy cause they would both have different wants.,

how pathetic writing all that on someone you do not even know. this 'someone' just so happens to be my father. i have been reading all the articles regarding dad's court case and quite frankly I am sick to death of the negativity coming out of some people's mouths. you have never met him so you cannot talk. he is the greatest person I know and has been an excellent dad to me over the years. yes we all have our faults, but the only choice we have is to mould ourselves into who we want to be and take the positive things you inherited and prevent any negative from reoccuring in your future.and i do agree. 7 years for this crime is #$%$ people can murder someone or rape someone and get less than that or never get caught! wow sure gives you faith in nz's justice system!dad is not a bad man. he is stupid, but not a criminal.

Hello Sasch.. the OP is a very angry man with psychological problems  and I'm sorry you had to read this stuff about your dad...

7 years is at the extreme end of the scale and the fact that he turned himself in and he was legally separated will be a big plus...

False documentation will be a problem but chances are high he will get home detention since it's the only time he's been before the courts...

I wish you all the best... and good on your for sticking up for your dad..

Bigamy is best practiced in groups of three or more.

Knew a bloke who met a women who had fled an abusive marriage.
Her husband was in another country and refused to divorce her.
So the new couple pretended to be married, had wedding photo's taken, and brought their kids up thinking their parents were married.
Some 15 years later she finally got her divorce, and they finally got married, in secret, and carried on as usual.
Their kids only found out about this once they were adults.

One wife is more than enough.
Though I can understand someone having the ability to love more than one spouse, there is no way I would want more than one wife. A true example of the mongamous male I am.
If I had the choice I would stay with who I married, we really are just one person.

One hears stories (in Aus) of bigamy being accepted with Social Security payments to immigrants already with several wives....but whether true or to incite a reaction...unsure Yeti...

Can't see the problem myself. My boyfriend has me and his wife.  She appreciates the time off from him when he stays with me and I appreciate him keeping his business talk with his wife and ONLY ROMANCING ME.

Works a treat!
